The momentum I felt coming out of Cambridge is starting to slow down, and the good news is that I no longer feel the need to conquer to world. The bad news is that I'm afraid I'm going to go back to old habits. I'm afraid of going back to the me I was before England happened. So, in an attempt to publicly record the incredible experiences I had there, here's a list of things I never want to forget:<div><br /></div><div>1. Walking past King's College after class as the sun is right behind it and thinking: "I'm in Cambridge."</div><div>2. The day I realized that I could write a 1500-word paper in one sitting.</div><div>3. Sitting in the rocking chair in the McLaverty's guest room and realizing that the more I read Shakespeare, the easier it gets.</div><div>4. Big Ben lit up at night.</div><div>5. Running along the quasi-forest trail off of Brooklands Avenue Cambridge with Alex, Rachael and whoever they convinced to come with us.</div><div>6. Running and walking through Regent's Park.</div><div>7. Falstaff at the Globe.</div><div>8. The taste of Galaxy chocolate.</div><div>9. The tears in my eyes while seeing Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey.</div><div>10. The value of journal writing I learned in the quiet night hours in Edinburgh.</div><div>11. The reverence of the cathedrals.</div><div>12. Being surrounded by some of the best student minds of America who wrote brilliant theses and dissertations during our 8-week stay.</div><div>13. Watching <i>Stranger than Fiction </i>and the first episode of the BBC Sherlock in the Pembroke Graduate Parlor.</div><div>14. John Benton bursting through Mike's and Ben's door in Regent's College saying "Fulvia is dead!"</div><div>15. Seeing Phantom of the Opera for the first time.</div><div>16. Learning about <i>A Room of One's Own</i> in its opening scene.</div><div>17. The day some tourists stopped us and asked us to take a picture with them to fulfill a scavenger hunt item: "take a picture with Cambridge students."</div><div>18. Seeing the Rosetta Stone.</div><div>19. My contrasting feelings about home during the first weeks of Cambridge and then the love I developed for it towards the end.</div><div>20. Learning how to make myself a transportable home base of comfort and security.</div><div>21. The realization that I should only compare myself to myself.</div><div>22. The night we slept in the Dublin airport and Jason pointing out that I shut down between 3 and 6 am.</div><div>23. "Read the Big Issue, buy the Big Issue..." I still don't know what the Big Issue was.</div><div>24. Walking through the Cambridge market after class.</div><div>25. Walking through all the parks in London!</div><div>26. Getting ice cream with the girls at Benets and sitting on King's Parade.</div><div>27. The Trailer of Life.</div><div>28. Doner Kebabs in Ireland.</div><div>29. Riverdance in Ireland!</div><div>30. Playing soccer at midnight in Newport, Wales and then again on the beach in Swansea, Wales.</div><div><br /></div><div>This list could really go on and on, but those are the big ones for now.</div>Kathryn H. It refers to the people in the Bloomsbury group which includes (but isn't limited to) Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, E. M. Forster, Duncan Grant, George Rylands, Roger Fry, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Since they were all pacifists and the men were C.O.s (conscientious objectors aka they resisted the conscription), the men were required to serve in some other way. So they moved from their homes in London and went to serve on farms in Sussex, to the south and near the ocean. Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant moved to Charleston, and enjoyed Clive Bell as a visitor sometimes. Let me just say that all the Bloomsberries were either related or lovers. And when I say all... I mean all. Regardless of gender, generation, or marriage status. It's still a bit mind-boggling to me.</div><div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, the Bloomsberries loved art. More particularly post-impressionistic art. Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Roger Fry were the main painters of the group. Every inch of Charleston and Monk's House (where the Woolfs lived) is painted. This includes the tables, fireplaces, walls, lampshades, couches, beds, bookcases, wardrobes, dressers, mirrors, and bathtubs. The result is incredible. As a class, we went to visit these places. Though the interiors were amazing, my favorites were the gardens. Take a look:</div></div><div><br /></div><div>These first five are from Charleston:</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKe4g-NmI/AAAAAAAAAjk/3x-tg-TTBSg/s1600/IMG_4043.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKe4g-NmI/AAAAAAAAAjk/3x-tg-TTBSg/s320/IMG_4043.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501299208004449890" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKevGLSVI/AAAAAAAAAjc/lfKMPJKYbSE/s1600/IMG_4030.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKevGLSVI/AAAAAAAAAjc/lfKMPJKYbSE/s320/IMG_4030.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501299205476141394" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKeLCLjBI/AAAAAAAAAjU/PtZqKje_j84/s1600/IMG_4022.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TFiKeLCLjBI/AAAAAAAAAjU/PtZqKje_j84/s320/IMG_4022.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501299195795704850" /></a><br />My expression here is a mixture of me smiling and concentrating on taking a picture. Time here makes sound. As I study in the quiet library or in my bedroom (between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00 am when the Spanish teenagers aren't all congregated outside their houses across the street singing "Yo Soy Espanol Espanol Espanol!"), I'm even more conscious of the tiny tick of the second hand on my wrist watch. If my watch I use to keep the time as I run and to wake me up in the morning stops beeping, I'm in trouble. So what's so important about time and sound?</div><div><br /></div><div>Karen Eiffel from <i>Stranger than Fiction</i> may present one thesis, but I think the sound reminds me that time is constant. It keeps going, whether I've made the most of the last 60 minutes or not. I can do a lot in 60 minutes. I found out here at Cambridge that after a bit of preparation and study, I can write 1500 words in a little over 60 minutes. The sounds of time constantly remind me to make the most of my time here. So here's to the last 3 weeks of my England adventure! They're bound to be great.</div>Kathryn H. The other college is King's College. The Pembroke Hall is where I eat my meals, and I study quite a bit at the Pembroke Library. Christopher Wren (any Londoners who don't know that name by now obviously didn't appreciate the wonderful David Brady's lectures) built the chapel here at Pembroke, and I believe it was one of his first projects, if not his first. The grounds at Pembroke are beautiful! I think the grass there is actually greener than the King's grass. The King's grass has suffered a bit with the recent heat, I'm afraid. There's a bit more shade at Pembroke.</div><div><br /></div><div>This statue of William Pitt is just outside the library. Pitt became England's youngest Prime Minister at age 24! You may know him from the new(ish) movie <i>Amazing Grace</i> as William Wilberforce's friend in Parliament who had that ambitious goal. Remember him?</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdOhzYPCI/AAAAAAAAAgo/7HL-c_cp2wQ/s1600/IMG_3413.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdOhzYPCI/AAAAAAAAAgo/7HL-c_cp2wQ/s320/IMG_3413.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496112530681510946" /></a><br /><div>Here's a view of the south side of Pembroke Chapel, designed by Christopher Wren.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdOWP7RkI/AAAAAAAAAgg/1zzfrnZK2U8/s1600/IMG_3414.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdOWP7RkI/AAAAAAAAAgg/1zzfrnZK2U8/s320/IMG_3414.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496112527580022338" /></a>Along the inside west wall.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdN-MjXfI/AAAAAAAAAgY/el2vgd1gazs/s1600/IMG_3835.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYdN-MjXfI/AAAAAAAAAgY/el2vgd1gazs/s320/IMG_3835.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496112521123421682" /></a>Left - dining hall. It was fun to realize that I knew my way around really well. It surprised me how comfortable I felt in such a big city that had overwhelmed me during my first week there. Perhaps I'm more of a city girl than I thought I was...<div><br /></div><div>As I predicted might happen, I saw a lot of repeats, including St. James' Park and Buckingham Palace. But I saw something else that made the entire trip worth it - the Houses of Parliament! The inside of the Houses of Parliament are exactly how I imagined they would be from looking at the outside: ornate, decorative, and intricate. What I wasn't expecting was how colorful everything was (excluding the rooms for the House of Commons). Technically, the Houses of Parliament are in Westminster Palace. So it's no surprise that the inside is decorated like a palace. No picture-taking allowed, as usual, but there are plenty of pictures on the web to make up for it.</div><div><br /></div><div>After the tour of the Houses of Parliament, we went to the Globe to see I Henry IV. I saw it with my London program, so this was another repeat experience. But it was worth it! First, the loud noise we were warned of that occurred in the second act actually happened this time, and Falstaff did a few things different that made me admire his comic acting even more. After the show, we went to Covent Garden for dinner and to watch some street performing.</div><div><br /></div><div>Me + camera in London = (inevitably) lots of pictures. Here's a glimpse:</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ2oHk3mI/AAAAAAAAAgA/JoVo45xt1OI/s1600/IMG_3871.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ2oHk3mI/AAAAAAAAAgA/JoVo45xt1OI/s320/IMG_3871.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496108821525093986" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ2U-U0oI/AAAAAAAAAf4/w00P9T3DvDs/s1600/IMG_3868.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ2U-U0oI/AAAAAAAAAf4/w00P9T3DvDs/s320/IMG_3868.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496108816386019970" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ16k1btI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Eis11aWyUwc/s1600/IMG_3862.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ16k1btI/AAAAAAAAAfw/Eis11aWyUwc/s320/IMG_3862.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496108809299783378" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1W0ZvTI/AAAAAAAAAfo/cYeHHt-F8tQ/s1600/IMG_3855.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1W0ZvTI/AAAAAAAAAfo/cYeHHt-F8tQ/s320/IMG_3855.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496108799701400882" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1HysjBI/AAAAAAAAAfg/zJq6TA-l9FE/s1600/IMG_3840.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1HysjBI/AAAAAAAAAfg/zJq6TA-l9FE/s320/IMG_3840.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496108795667713042" /></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1HysjBI/AAAAAAAAAfg/zJq6TA-l9FE/s1600/IMG_3840.JPG"></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TEYZ1HysjBI/AAAAAAAAAfg/zJq6TA-l9FE/s1600/IMG_3840.JPG"></a><div>The morals of the story:</div><div><br /></div><div>I have good memories of London town!</div><div>Sometimes foregoing efficiency/functionality for splendour (yes, "-our") is a good choice.</div></div></div>Kathryn H. On the way to Edinburgh, we stopped at Fountains Abbey, which were founded in 1132 and are the largest monastic ruins in the UK. The ruins and the surrounding landscape are beautiful. Check it out:</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIoVEXlsI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/vAGgU2wQU6E/s1600/IMG_3491.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIoVEXlsI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/vAGgU2wQU6E/s320/IMG_3491.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491656653312333506" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIn6hmCWI/AAAAAAAAAdI/-N1X5QTK_9w/s1600/IMG_3492.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIn6hmCWI/AAAAAAAAAdI/-N1X5QTK_9w/s320/IMG_3492.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491656646187157858" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZInfkRV6I/AAAAAAAAAdA/Hg0i8PktYR8/s1600/IMG_3452.JPG"></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZInfkRV6I/AAAAAAAAAdA/Hg0i8PktYR8/s1600/IMG_3452.JPG"><img style="text-align: left;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZInfkRV6I/AAAAAAAAAdA/Hg0i8PktYR8/s320/IMG_3452.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491656638950627234" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIm1QDzZI/AAAAAAAAAc4/ToKklAnoyNQ/s1600/IMG_3448.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZIm1QDzZI/AAAAAAAAAc4/ToKklAnoyNQ/s320/IMG_3448.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491656627591564690" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZImbPqddI/AAAAAAAAAcw/KrZcnOY7Clg/s1600/IMG_3441.JPG"></a></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZImbPqddI/AAAAAAAAAcw/KrZcnOY7Clg/s1600/IMG_3441.JPG"><img style="text-align: left;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TDZImbPqddI/AAAAAAAAAcw/KrZcnOY7Clg/s320/IMG_3441.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491656620610581970" /></a><div><div>Saturday, we went on a day trip to hike in the Trossachs, or the "mini-highlands." It's ok to see the country instead of stay inside reading all day.</div>Kathryn H. Solihull is about 20 minutes south of Birmingham and 20 minutes east (I think that's the right direction) of Stratford-upon-Avon. I'm staying with some friends of my grandparents who work in the church offices here. Marion offered to take me to Warwick Castle, which is just a 45-minute drive away. Warwick Castle (said Warrick) is everything a castle should be. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside, and looks like a castle from a storybook:</div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_8AaYZB6I/AAAAAAAAAYQ/RBVi8iF_4YQ/s1600/IMG_3259.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_8AaYZB6I/AAAAAAAAAYQ/RBVi8iF_4YQ/s320/IMG_3259.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485379955172378530" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_-xj7-I/AAAAAAAAAYI/FUq5OmB7eL0/s1600/IMG_3245.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_-xj7-I/AAAAAAAAAYI/FUq5OmB7eL0/s320/IMG_3245.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485379947761758178" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_n1jsCI/AAAAAAAAAYA/V8GRrZwOSd8/s1600/IMG_3242.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_n1jsCI/AAAAAAAAAYA/V8GRrZwOSd8/s320/IMG_3242.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485379941604503586" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_MeFj4I/AAAAAAAAAX4/KsbtJ7yPbK0/s1600/IMG_3230.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7_MeFj4I/AAAAAAAAAX4/KsbtJ7yPbK0/s320/IMG_3230.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485379934258302850" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7-1iV8RI/AAAAAAAAAXw/dzezrKIzgd8/s1600/IMG_3209.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_7-1iV8RI/AAAAAAAAAXw/dzezrKIzgd8/s320/IMG_3209.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485379928102138130" /></a><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2mZnDenI/AAAAAAAAAXI/5LJLNBmfDEU/s1600/IMG_3179.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2mZnDenI/AAAAAAAAAXI/5LJLNBmfDEU/s320/IMG_3179.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485374010730707570" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2mE4ztYI/AAAAAAAAAXA/LdGxLhdHCaI/s1600/IMG_3170.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2mE4ztYI/AAAAAAAAAXA/LdGxLhdHCaI/s320/IMG_3170.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485374005168027010" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2lvdxttI/AAAAAAAAAW4/uXSwpAFNXBY/s1600/IMG_3162.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2lvdxttI/AAAAAAAAAW4/uXSwpAFNXBY/s320/IMG_3162.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485373999417505490" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2lFoVfhI/AAAAAAAAAWw/Xo-e3XxAP3g/s1600/IMG_3158.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2lFoVfhI/AAAAAAAAAWw/Xo-e3XxAP3g/s320/IMG_3158.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485373988187504146" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2kgtecII/AAAAAAAAAWo/Se4c4rd8EfY/s1600/IMG_3144.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_2kgtecII/AAAAAAAAAWo/Se4c4rd8EfY/s320/IMG_3144.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485373978276950146" /></a>Kathryn H. It's one thing to just see the place, but to see a play there is one of the coolest things I've ever done. Everything is done the way it would have been done in Shakespeare's time, except for the lighting and other safety regulations. In these pictures, the stage is set for Macbeth, but you can't say Macbeth inside the theatre. Inside the theatre, you call it "The Scottish Play."</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ynIpy67I/AAAAAAAAAWg/jPyrCuMJdJ8/s1600/IMG_3108.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ynIpy67I/AAAAAAAAAWg/jPyrCuMJdJ8/s320/IMG_3108.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485369625312160690" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ymykvANI/AAAAAAAAAWY/ZJPYFgFteKw/s1600/IMG_3111.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ymykvANI/AAAAAAAAAWY/ZJPYFgFteKw/s320/IMG_3111.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485369619385352402" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ymEJ8C9I/AAAAAAAAAWQ/jgZV1O6qesI/s1600/IMG_3092.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ymEJ8C9I/AAAAAAAAAWQ/jgZV1O6qesI/s320/IMG_3092.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485369606924930002" /></a>Kathryn H. We'd been by here before, but it wasn't open for tours. The Poet's Corner was my favorite place inside. After seeing only a few of the numerous names of famous authors buried there my eyes started to water. It was so overwhelming to think that the people who wrote the curriculum of English classes in schools all over the world, who inspire the minds of readers and writers, and who searched to find truth in math, science, history and life are buried right there. It's almost like walking through the Salt Lake Cemetery and finding the headstones of the prophets. Almost. Here's pictures from the earlier day when we couldn't go inside:</div></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ZLwPSJlI/AAAAAAAAAUY/zRuD2uRoCrE/s1600/IMG_1454.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_ZLwPSJlI/AAAAAAAAAUY/zRuD2uRoCrE/s320/IMG_1454.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485341667111347794" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XTFcuIcI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/3ASNTQO9BcQ/s1600/IMG_1453.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XTFcuIcI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/3ASNTQO9BcQ/s320/IMG_1453.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485339594040680898" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XSvsn4LI/AAAAAAAAAUI/JIpGKTsY-Io/s1600/IMG_1448.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XSvsn4LI/AAAAAAAAAUI/JIpGKTsY-Io/s320/IMG_1448.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485339588201799858" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XSI5-qHI/AAAAAAAAAUA/Mk1U2vWPj-Q/s1600/IMG_1444.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XSI5-qHI/AAAAAAAAAUA/Mk1U2vWPj-Q/s320/IMG_1444.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485339577788835954" /></a>Jenny was still here that day!<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XRiURMkI/AAAAAAAAAT4/IWl82BdgUzM/s1600/IMG_1442.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TB_XRiURMkI/AAAAAAAAAT4/IWl82BdgUzM/s320/IMG_1442.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485339567430120002" /></a><div style="text-align: left;">They're just pictures of the outside because you can't take pictures inside. Inside is beautiful too. It's interesting to compare Westminster Abbey to St. Paul's Cathedral - they serve similar purposes, but they look very different. Where St. Paul's is stone and full of light, Westminster is darker, with candles and lots of wood. Both fantastic in their own ways.</div></div>Kathryn H. Many people were checking things off their lists and trying to fit in as much as they could in the time they had left, whereas I was telling myself "You still have 9 more weeks to fit in your suitcase. Slow down." I started making a mental list of the places I'd been more than once to get a feel for what I liked most. Here is the list:<div><br /></div><div>Hatchards bookstore: 3 times</div><div><br /></div><div>Sherlock Holmes Museum Store: 4 times (It's on Baker Street anyway, about 2 minutes away from the college)</div><div><br /></div><div>Fortnum & Mason: 2 times</div><div><br /></div><div>Hard Rock Cafe: 2 times</div><div><br /></div><div>St. Paul's Cathedral: 3 times</div><div><br /></div><div>The Globe: 2 times</div><div><br /></div><div>Westminster Abbey/surrounding area: 3 times</div><div><br /></div><div>Regent's Park grounds: more than I can count. Multiple times each day.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Old Vic: 2 times (second time a bit better than the first)</div><div><br /></div><div>Lyceum Theatre, trying to get Lion King tickets and then actually going to Lion King: 3 times (I think)</div><div><br /></div><div>Baker Street Tube Station: At least twice a day, every day.</div><div><br /></div><div>Walking past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament: about 100 times less than I would have liked.</div><div><br /></div><div>Kensington Gardens: 2 times</div><div><br /></div><div>And then there's places I'd have liked to go back at least one more time:</div><div><br /></div><div>The British Museum</div><div><br /></div><div>Stratford (not London, I know. I actually might go back there this week! I'm only about a 20-minute train ride away...)</div><div><br /></div><div>Bath (also not London)</div><div><br /></div><div>Buckingham Palace (maybe to see some of the inside come August...)</div><div><br /></div><div>Nando's (really good chicken restaurant - I think it was Brazilian)</div><div><br /></div><div>The National Portrait Gallery</div><div><br /></div><div>Greenwich</div><div><br /></div><div>And that's all I can think of right now. I won't make a list of things I didn't see and want to, because that could go on forever. I'm convinced that you can never run out of things to do or places to see in London. Even if you've seen it before, being with the right people can make anything fun and exciting. Here's to great friends in the London group and many happy memories!</div><div><br /></div>Kathryn H. Olsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03868980699457523579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712809846894786365.post-69726500727650627132010-06-11T12:25:00.000-07:002010-06-11T14:32:25.876-07:00St. Paul's Bell Ringing, Kew Gardens, Hampton Court, Stonehenge and Bath translated into Kathryn-ese mean "Ridiculously Beautiful".<div><div><div>A few unfortunate things about traveling around the English countryside:<div><br /></div><div>1. It's really hard to not take 30 bazillion pictures of everything I see.</div><div>2. The views from the roads through the countryside are overwhelmingly gorgeous. That's not unfortunate at all. However, thick rows of trees line the roads, giving only tiny peeks of the gorgeous views, making it close to impossible to get a good picture from a moving tour bus.</div><div><br /></div><div>Now that those are out of the way, it's been an incredible week:</div><div><br /></div><div><ul><li>It started with attending the ringing of the bells at <b>St. Paul's Cathedral</b>. Incredible in so many ways, most of which those who went are not allowed to share. Just know that I was thinking about Quasimoto the bell-ringer a lot and I want to see <i>The Hunchback of Notre Dame</i> again.</li><li><b>Kew Gardens</b> - First, imagine you're carrying a gun and repeat "kew" a few times in a high-pitched voice. This will make you have an experience similar to the battle scene we had on our way from the train station to the garden entrance. Second, "kew" must have "lots of trees" somewhere in its etymology. There are many, many trees there. Also, there is a large pagoda whose presence we never quite figured out. Formally the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew has 300 acres of beauty, including some royal cottages and ponds.</li></ul><div>To justify the lots of trees comment, here's a view from the Treetop Walkway. They go on forever!</div></div></div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaaXaa9eI/AAAAAAAAASg/YTZB2EMvhqM/s1600/IMG_2394.JPG"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaaXaa9eI/AAAAAAAAASg/YTZB2EMvhqM/s320/IMG_2394.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481613474215425506" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a><br /><div>This is Queen Charlotte's cottage. She came here with her family during the summer. I think this is the royal family's version of having a cabin up the mountain, except that having a cottage in the middle of 300 acres of ponds, flowers and trees from around the world might perhaps beat the cabin. My favorite part about this cottage is that the pathway leading up to it and the grounds surrounding it are covered with bushes of gorgeous purple flowers. My camera didn't do any of them justice.</div><div><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaaKw-liI/AAAAAAAAASY/u_IISTykcT4/s1600/IMG_2429.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaaKw-liI/AAAAAAAAASY/u_IISTykcT4/s320/IMG_2429.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481613470820374050" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a><br /></div><div>One of the waterfalls.<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaZH189ZI/AAAAAAAAASQ/znCBRsHBDlk/s1600/IMG_2472.JPG"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaZH189ZI/AAAAAAAAASQ/znCBRsHBDlk/s320/IMG_2472.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481613452856063378" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a>You'll see this pose a lot in my pictures. The combination of our close height and my awesome self-portrait skills makes this position work quite well sometimes. Sometimes we spice it up with a little bit of 5-feet-tall Lynsey, and we get some funny results. You'll see some of those later, I'm sure.</div><div><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaYJGyOcI/AAAAAAAAASI/0l4KVSOS21o/s1600/IMG_2357.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKaYJGyOcI/AAAAAAAAASI/0l4KVSOS21o/s320/IMG_2357.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481613436015229378" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a>I believe this is the Palm House. I learned here that I could live in a palace, at least for a visit, and spend all day walking around with a book and be content for the next 100 years. This is where many of the English monarchs spent their time, including Henry VIII, Mary I, James I, Charles I, Charles II, William III and Mary II, and George II. The palace is marvelous - everything you'd imagine a palace to be. The kitchens are huge - they had to feed around 1000 people sometimes. The grounds were my favorite.</li></ul><div>What's missing in this picture is my giddy excitement about this garden and this view. You really can't tell, but this is every bit of the word majestic and amazing. This is the Privy Garden with a side view of the palace.</div></div></div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhiXiqHbI/AAAAAAAAATI/X25Bgl8HGHk/s1600/IMG_2702.JPG"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhiXiqHbI/AAAAAAAAATI/X25Bgl8HGHk/s320/IMG_2702.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481621308270321074" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a><br /><div>This is the Main Entrance to the Palace:</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhh6z1mhI/AAAAAAAAATA/FAeK8LjqWC0/s1600/IMG_2685.JPG"><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhh6z1mhI/AAAAAAAAATA/FAeK8LjqWC0/s320/IMG_2685.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481621300557748754" style="text-align: left; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a><br /></div><div>As it does often in England, it rained for a bit while we were there. The resulting effect on the roses in the gardens excited me quite a bit, and I can say that this is definitely not the only picture I took of a rose with water droplets.</div><div><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhhmYkD7I/AAAAAAAAAS4/zF3ld2z4D5Q/s1600/IMG_2668.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKhhmYkD7I/AAAAAAAAAS4/zF3ld2z4D5Q/s320/IMG_2668.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481621295074643890" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></a><br /></div><div>This is Fountain Court inside the palace. However, it's most decidedly a one-time thing. The audio guide was a bit long. To summarize it: Stonehenge is really old, the stones are really heavy, and there are a lot of cool predictions of how they got there. To see my pictures, google Stonehenge.</li></ul><ul><li><b>Bath</b> is quite under-rated. Jane Austen didn't like it here, but I sure did. The Baths themselves are pretty great and it's fun to imagine ancient Romans wandering around and enjoying themselves. Apparently, bathing here was quite a religious activity. I tasted the famous Bath water - it was hot, gross water. Bleh. I could only drink two gulps.</li></ul><div>Here is the floor of one of the baths. From my half-interested listening to the audio guide, I think the floor sat on these little stone pillars to keep the bathers from getting burned by the steam flowing through the ground...</div></div></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKnI1KxZuI/AAAAAAAAATw/xtLBhctd1GQ/s1600/IMG_2869.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TBKnI1KxZuI/AAAAAAAAATw/xtLBhctd1GQ/s320/IMG_2869.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481627466616366818" /></a><div><div style="text-align: left;">This is a famous street in Bath. We took the train about 45 minutes, and then we took a cab for another maybe 7 minutes or so. The train ride is worth it just for the view. As soon as you're out of London, the world turns into green hillsides with sheep, cows and horses. It is one of the most beautiful sights I have seen. The temple itself is pretty simple, but the grounds are gorgeous. They are truly "grounds" and I'm not sure if I even saw all of them. It's like another whole park with a temple in the middle. Accept the fact that while beautiful London is outside your door, staying inside and taking a nap is ok.</div><div><br /><div>2. Also know that there is no Mucinex at the Boots down the street.</div><div><br /></div><div>3. One person in the dorm gets sick, you all get sick. Fortunately, this means that you know by observing all the other girls that after your cold progresses to a cough, the worst is over.</div><div><br /></div><div>4. Of course it will rain the days you get sick. This either means that you don't feel as bad for staying inside to get better, or it means that you feel even more miserable while going on the mostly-outside Tower of London tour. Luckily, you brought an umbrella.</div><div><br /></div><div>5. You won't feel like taking many pictures, especially of yourself. I think this is the one and only picture of me I have from the past few days. We're at the Tower of London. It was so cool! I couldn't stop thinking about how fun it would be to take all my Harmon cousins there. All the guys would love the beefeaters, the torture chamber and the armor, while the girls and I would walk several times down the moving sidewalk that moves past the crown jewels. Who knew there could be so much sparkly beautifulness in one building?</div></div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TAbh3Amf8ZI/AAAAAAAAAPo/W1r-DPkOYKg/s1600/IMG_2026.JPG"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TAbh3Amf8ZI/AAAAAAAAAPo/W1r-DPkOYKg/s320/IMG_2026.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478314331913318802" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></a>More pictures of the Tower:</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TAbobQA99gI/AAAAAAAAAQA/hoO9_IPaJ3w/s1600/IMG_2019.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oWizJ25kqek/TAbobQA99gI/AAAAAAAAAQA/hoO9_IPaJ3w/s320/IMG_2019.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478321551595927042" /></a>Some house fronts inside.
